The patented technology harnesses this energy in the lower atmosphere using an application of the Archimedes principle. The core of the system is an expandable, leak-tight container filled with a material that evaporates at mid-altitude temperatures. Options include commercially available refrigerents such as pentane, freons and ammonia.
​The material evaporates and expands at low altitude, displacing air and, in accordance with the Archimedes principle, creates a buoyant force. The buoyancy is insufficient to lift the container directly, but if the container weight is counterweighted using a lighter than air (LTA) balloon or an opposing and equal weight on a pulley, the forces are balanced such that the container will rise when the material is evaporated and descend when condensed. This force and movement can be harnessed to produce renewable energy.
